Reducing the environmental impact of your office
September 08

Marker

A quick evaluation of the way you do things and the products you use in your office could help reduce your businesses’ impact on the environment as well as save money.

Whilst one way to create profit is to increase volume, another way is to decrease consumption.

Sometimes the way we consume things over time becomes wasteful or there may be better ways of getting the job done.

Doing a quick check of your office (or delegating it to someone to do) could help find some new habits that increase your profits.

TIPS > PRINTING & PAPER

  • » Use recycled paper
  • » Only print documents when necessary
  • » Print documents in “draft mode” where possible to save ink
  • » Print double sided where possible
  • » Organise for Planet Ark to collect your used printer cartridges for recycling.

TIPS > LIGHTING

  • » Use natural lighting from skylights or windows instead of artificial lighting where possible
  • » Install energy efficient light globes
  • » Take out light globes if they are unneccesary
  • » Turn all lights off after hours
  • » Turn lights off in rooms that are only used periodically (such as the lunch or store room) and put up signs to remind others to do so.

TIPS > ELECTRICITY

  • » Turn computers completely off after hours
  • » Activate the sleep mode on computers to start after 10 minutes of inactivity (don’t use “screensavers” as they use more energy)
  • » Turn all other electrical equipment (such as photocopiers) completely off after hours
  • » Only use air conditioning when completely necessary and when staff are present.

TIPS > WASTE
» Use a recycling bin and pick up service for all paper, cardboard, plastic and glass

  • » Don’t use disposal cups and utensils in the kitchen
  • » Use email instead of faxing and mailing where possible
  • » Remove your businesses’ name from unwanted mailing lists.
  • TIPS > PURCHASING OFFICE EQUIPMENT

    • » When purchasing new equipment, ensure it uses relatively less energy as this can potentially save hundreds or thousands of dollars (in electricity or for example, printer cartridges) over its lifetime. Try looking for the “ENERGY STAR”.

    TIPS > WATER

    • » Select “Economy” mode on the dishwasher
    • » Install flow reducers on taps
    • » Use dual flush toilets.
