One of the biggest issues for workshops is managing and disposing of liquid wastes. This is also one of the areas of concern for Local Councils, and there is specific legislation regarding it. There are so many liquid wastes produced in the automotive industry, so making sure they are handled the right way and disposed of correctly can remove a lot of headaches.
The reason that the disposal of liquid waste has been an area that is given a lot of attention is because the incorrect disposal of oils, coolants, petrols and other substances can have catastrophic consequences. Any contaminant that is disposed of into soil or down the stormwater drain means that the environment is directly affected. This could mean that plant life is destroyed or animals are killed. Did you know that one litre of oil, if spilled into a waterway, contaminates 1 million litres of water? This is the same water that we drink, wash in and swim in. We all have an invested interest in making sure that liquid wastes are disposed of correctly.
* For automotive workshops, waste batteries that are being recycled, reprocessed or reused do not require a consignment authorisation number or a transport certificate.
**Unless crushed and drained free of oil, then they can be removed as scrap metal.
Trackable liquid wastes need to be removed by a licensed waste removal contractor. These contractors should be able to show you their license number as issued by the DECC, and they need to have Consignment Agreements (CA) with the waste management facility that they are taking the waste to. (If you are looking for a licensed waste removal contractor in your area, download the MTA’s Environmental Product & Services Directory from the MTA’s Green Stamp Plus website: greenstamp.mtansw.com.au/directory.php).
