| Storage charges should be discussed up front, and if you are considering charging them to a customer you should notify them in writing and allow a period after the date of the letter for the situation to be rectified.
Calculating Storage & Administration Charges
There are no set fees for storage charges. Due to the requirements of the Trade Practices Act, the MTA cannot determine a storage charge. Each business needs to determine its own rate for storage. It is sensible to base storage charges on the costs incurred by having the goods in your premises, for example:
» Administration costs (moving the goods to continue with other business activities or » time spent contacting the owner to arrange pick-up)
» Value of your premises (or rent)
» Value of the goods (therefore your liability)
» Maintenance (if the goods had to be re-cleaned or otherwise maintained)
When working out a fair and reasonable charge, you should carefully think about these things so that your storage rate is justifiable.
Uncollected Goods
If goods are ready for collection but the owner is failing to pick up the goods, or if you cannot trace or communicate with the owner then the Uncollected Goods Act 1995 applies. This Act outlines the processes that can be taken to deal with uncollected goods. If these processes are followed then uncollected goods can be disposed of and costs can be regained. |
