Auto Careers

Have you ever wondered what your Association does to promote careers in the automotive industry? Read below to see what we do and have planned for the future.

Annually MTA NSW attends over 30 career events across NSW.  These careers events are usually in the form of careers fairs or information sessions and are attend by MTA NSW and MTA Apprentice Plus staff.  The careers events are held all over NSW including metro Sydney and regional NSW. Most career events are designed to bring together a group of schools either in a particular region and are attended by other association and a range of university and vocational education and training providers.  MTA NSW has been doing this for 5 years now and we find that in that time the events have become more structured and that our attendance is a valuable connect to these school students.

Upcoming careers fairs for the next 2 months include:

» Albury Wodonga & Wagga Wagga - 24th and 25th June

» Shoalhaven Area Careers - 29th June

» Central Coast - 30th June

» Napean District - 2nd & 3rd July

» Bankstown - 8th & 9th July

» Lismore - 28th July

» Coffs Harbour - 29th July

» Port Macquarie - 30th July

» Taree - 31st July

» Far South Coast - 4th August

The final careers event for the year is in September. Typically careers events are held between May and September each year. On average the number of students attending a careers event can range from a couple of hundred to a couple of thousand.

When MTA NSW commenced attending careers events the range and depth of the available automotive careers flyers was very limited so in 2005/2006 MTA NSW developed its own careers flyers.  These careers flyers a distinctive, informative and cover a great cross section of careers within our industry.  We also developed a parents focused flyer and a general flyer that looked at all the careers and how to go about getting a job in automotive.  The flyers are highly industry specific and cover not just trade areas as they aim to highlight the diversity of careers within the industry. The flyers were update 2 years ago and at that time MTA NSW engaged with the other States & Territories to ensure that they could be used across Australia.  As a result our careers flyers are by all the States & Territories to promote careers, they are even on display at MTAA.

The careers flyers are on our website just click on the link below;

MTA NSW has been working with Northern Beaches Business Education Network (NBBEN) on an Adopt a School Automotive Program.  This 10 week program for year 10 students is open to 30 individuals across schools in northern Sydney and the northern beaches.  The project is a community project that involves delivery by MTA NSW & TAFE NSW. The project not only focuses on mechanical but is inclusive of a range of sectors including sales and administration.  This program has lead to people being employed in our industry and to opening up their perception of our industry and the perception of their parents as well. The program also includes a presentation dinner at the end to show off the program to parents and stakeholders.  This is the 3rd year this program has run and will finalise in early July.  MTA NSW intends to support this program into the future and is happy to consider how to replicate it in other areas. Below are 2 articles related to last years project.

Late last year MTAA was approached to partake in the A-Life Project.   With sponsorship from MTAA Superannuation Fund, MTAA representing all the States and Territories was fortunate to engage in this exciting project.  This national project was based around promoting the industry through a series of video interviews/profiles across 5 key automotive careers that would combine with other industry profiles to form the A-Life project.  A-Life is a website and DVD that is representative of the website, that has to date been distributed to all school in Australia and the website has been up and running for some months now.

The A-Life website covers a wide range of industries and careers, the 5 automotive interviews/profiles are panel beating, spray painting, vehicle sales, light vehicle mechanic and motorcycle mechanic.  The 5 careers areas were chosen at a national level.  The interviews/profiles are dynamic, interesting and designed to target young people while still being interesting to anyone considering a career in the automotive industry.  The aim of each interview/profile is to explore a day in the life of that person and their career while getting to know how they got to where they are.  To view this website, go to www.alife.net.au MTA NSW has many copies of the DVD so if you would like one sent to you email your details including your address to Danielle.Andrews@mtansw.com.au

MTA NSW is an active member of the MTAA Training and Skills Shortage Committee which was established some years ago to address at a national level key areas surrounding skill shortages and training.  The committee meets regularly to discuss and be proactive in these areas and is currently from a careers perspective considering 2 proposals for funding, the first being the development of a national careers and industry promotional website.  The second a board national project over 3 years to look at training promotion, careers promotion and employer education working on the ground with members, schools and other stakeholders to improve the perception and uptake of careers in automotive industry while also working to improving training delivery and training options.

MTA NSW is keen to improve the number and quality of participants coming into the industry so if you have any suggestions on how we can continue to do so or if you would like to engage in any of the projects please do not hesitate to email Danielle.Andrews@mtansw.com.au
