Workcover Alert Issued for Inflation of Tyres on Split Rim Wheel Assemblies
Every other year I come across the unfortunate occurrence of the death of a person following the inflation of a tyre on a split rim. Mark this year down as another year that a death has occurred.
Employers that have staff that repair or replace tyres that are on split rims must ensure that safe work procedures are in place for this process. Employers then need to ensure that staff are trained and follow the safe work procedure. Of course the development and application of such safe operating or safe work procedures can be applied to many high risk functions undertaken at work.
To develop a safe procedure one would commence by stepping through the job to be done, noting any risks that are evident with each step. Then describe the appropriate safe process to be followed in order to avoid the risk identified. A safe work procedure should include reference to that identified risk so assist with awareness and avoidance. Where the function involves working with equipment or machinery incorporate the manufacturer’s guidelines into your procedure. Those members using MTA’s AutoSafe system within ERIS will be able to access a number of generic safe work procedures for adaption.
Following is the alert published by WorkCover which provides guidance on the danger with split rim tyre assemblies.
