Firstly, I would like to thank the members for having elected me as President of the Motor Traders’ Association of New South Wales. It is a great honour to be elected to this prestigious position and I will make every endeavour to ensure that the Association continues in its great tradition of service to and representation of the Motor Industry in New South Wales.
Next year [2010] will be the centenary of MTA, the Association having been founded in 1910. It is much to the credit of past Presidents and members that MTA has remained a uniting force for all those years and is still upholding the traditions of service and representation for which it has become renowned.
The underpinning mission of the Association has always been to ensure that the motor industry in this State is a leader in terms of quality of service to consumers and that the motor industry is dealt with fairly by government and in the media.
While each Division of the Association has, and will continue to have, important issues that need to be addressed it is fair to say that the motor industry is in good shape.
The fact that the motor industry in New South Wales is a strong and vibrant sector of the State’s economy is in no small way a result of the work of the Association over many years now.
The industry began with the import of the first petrol driven motor vehicle, a De Dion Bouton le Voiturette in 1900. The vehicle was imported by Alick McNeill partner in Austral Cycle and Motor Agency. It was Alick McNeill who convened a series of meetings of a few car importers in 1909 to form an Association to protect their mutual interests and promote the motor industry. On 16th January, 1910 the Motor Traders’ Association of New South Wales became a legal entity.

For the first two years the Association was managed by a Committee of eight motor dealers with Kingsley Strack, an accountant, as part-time Secretary. The first Office of the Association was in Challis House, Martin Place Sydney. In 1912 Alick McNeill was elected as first President of the Association. Since them forty-two Presidents have served the Association with distinction.
The various Presidents, Board Members and Governing Councillors have guided the industry through the depression and two World Wars. Once again Australian soldiers, sailors and airmen are protecting the nation through service in foreign lands and Australia faces its worst economic crisis since the great depression.
The Board and Management of the Association are now preparing a series of significant events to celebrate the 100 years of the Association. When these plans are complete full details will be released through the MTA Journal. Any suggestions by members would be greatly appreciated.
I urge all members of the Association to join enthusiastically in these celebrations of our industry.
