Subsidised Energy Assessments for Small Businesses

The NSW Department of Environment, Climate Change and Water (DECCW) is running a program called “Energy Efficiency for Small Businesses” with the aim of assisting businesses to recognise where power usage can be reduced and providing the tools to do so. In addition, if the retrofitting costs a certain amount a rebate may apply.

Electricity bills are often paid without really being examined and often rise significantly over time – yet no-one notices. This is a great way of getting an independent consultant in to review your electricity usage for a very low price.

How the program works

  1. Register

You need to register your business with the DECCW so that they know you are interested. To register, go to www.environment.nsw.gov.au/sustainbus and download the form, or call 1300 361 967 or email sustainbus@environment.nsw.gov.au. To be eligible, your business’ electricity bill needs to be less than about $20,000 (including GST) per year or you must employ less than 10 employees.

  1. Be Assessed

You will be contacted by an energy assessor to organise a time for the assessment. The assessment will take place at your business and will take between 30 and 60 minutes to complete. Your electricity bill for the previous 12 months will need to be available. This initial assessment costs $50. The rest of the assessment cost will be deducted from your rebate if you apply for one.

  1. Take Action

Your energy assessor will send you your report within 5 business days. It will let you know how you can reduce your electricity consumption and what sort of payback period to expect. Not all of the measures listed will cost money. You can then choose to do the actions that do cost money, and if so you can apply for a rebate of up to $5000 to pay for up to 50% of your costs. You need to keep your receipts and carry out the retrofitting/equipment purchases within 6 months of the original assessment. The actions that attract the rebate are those with a payback period of greater than 2 years.
