Spotlight ON SAFETY

Nothing compares to losing a valuable staff member through injury or illness, especially if you are a small business. The time lost when staff are off work can be costly not to mention the added pressure on others including the employer.

But you can do something to prevent it!

WorkCover and the Motor Traders’ Association (MTA) have been working together to encourage workplace safety in the retail motor industry.

What

If you are having trouble with safety at your workplace, WorkCover and the MTA are here to help you.

We can send you information, tell you where you can get information or provide advice over the telephone to help you. We can even meet you to talk about safety.

All you have to do is ask!

Some information that has specifically been written for the retail motor industry includes these fact sheets. These fact sheets were developed with input from MTA at a number of industry meetings with WorkCover as one response to specific risk areas that incur high injury rates for this industry. They contain simple checklists to help you and your staff avoid getting hurt or becoming ill at work. They have information on:

1. Managing the Risks of Sprains and Strains within the Motor Vehicle Repair Industry
2. Managing the Risks of Slips, Trips and Falls within the Motor Vehicle Repair Industry
3. Managing the Use of Plant within the Motor Vehicle Repair Industry
4. Managing the Use of Hazardous Substances within the Motor Vehicle Repair Industry.

Where

The fact sheets are available from the MTA’s AutoSafe system (www.eris.com.au under the OHS section along with a host of other information, checklists and guidance material), MTA’s website (www.mtansw.com.au under “OHS” within the Employment Relations section) or from WorkCover’s website at www.workcover.nsw.gov.au
More information

If you would like more information about safety at work, contact the MTA on 9213 4222 who will help you. Or if you need to talk to WorkCover contact the “toll free” number 131050 or visit www.workcover.nsw.gov.au.
