Mechanical workshops should aim for Green Stamp Accreditation

Over the past year I have been working closely with the MTA’s Green Stamp program regarding the environmental issues that all mechanical workshops in NSW face. I have visited several businesses across NSW who have wanted the MTA to visit and help with any environmental issues. Up until now these visits were mainly educational, but now Members have the opportunity to become Environmentally Accredited and be recognised for their achievements.

Achieving Environmental Accreditation means that your business, having met certain criteria, can promote itself as a “Green Stamp” business – demonstrating that your business is active and has a positive attitude towards the local community and environment.

I believe that all businesses should aim to become Accredited and I’m happy to visit your business to help you do so. There is a set criteria for businesses to meet and there are Information Guides on the MTA’s Green Stamp website to give you further information.

Accreditation costs $150 including GST for the first year, and $50 including GST each year after that. This includes an onsite inspection (approximately 45 to 60 minutes), certificate, outdoor colour sign, fliers and the ability to use the Green Stamp logo. This is a small investment for big future rewards, not only does Accreditation promote your business to the community, but it will encourage you to think about your current practices and perhaps cut down on some activities that are costing you money.

From visiting Members for Green Stamp over the past year I have generally been impressed by most MTA Members and their environmental practices. Some of the main areas where we as an industry can improve upon are our liquid storage and bunding to prevent any liquid from leaving our workshop area. If, as an industry, we work hard to do things that lessen our industry’s impact on the environment and then tell our communities about it, we will be doing our industry a big favour.

If you would like more information on the Green Stamp Accreditation program please contact Nick Brill or Sophie Luttrell at MTA (02 9213 4222 or greenstamp@mtansw.com.au or www.greenstamp.mtansw.com.au)
