A free service offering small business advice and support over the phone was officially launched by Small Business Minister Dr Craig Emerson today.

The Small Business Support Line delivers on the Rudd Government's $10 million budget commitment to provide additional advisory services to small business during the global recession.

"Establishing and maintaining a small business can be a daunting prospect at the best of times, but even more so during an economic downturn," Dr Emerson said.

"In many cases people just don't know where to turn.

"This support line will help small business operators navigate the myriad of government departments and specialised services needed to establish or improve a business.

"The lines will be staffed by advisers with business experience and strong customers service skills," he said.

"They have also been trained by 'beyondblue' to help callers who may be suffering from depression or personal issues associated with running a small business."

Dr Emerson said the support line would double as a complaints clearing house for those experiencing problems with access to and cost of bank finance.

Issues will then be referred to the Australian Bankers Association for timely response.

People can phone the small business support team toll free on 1800 777 275 between 8am and 6pm weekdays. Email inquiries are also welcome at sbsl@innovation.gov.au

The Rudd Government is also developing a $10 million program to help equip small businesses to go online and improve their e-business capabilities.

The online program is expected to be up and running towards the end of the year.
