Slips, Trips & Falls

Workshop slips, trips and falls are common in motor trade workshops and affect workers as well as customers and visitors to the workshop. Injury statistics show these are often due to:

» slips in oil or water (eg where water drips off vehicles when driven into the workshop);
» falls off ladders or stairs or off pit steps;
» trips over stored items (eg new stock not shelved);
» trips on steps or uneven floor surfaces;
» falls from unguarded mezzanine floors;
» falls from crates or drums used to access high areas; and
» falls when jumping out of high vehicles.

To prevent slips or trips:

» clean up spills as soon as they occur;
» make sure shoes have non slip soles;
» keep work areas and aisles clear of trip hazards; and
» repair/remodel uneven floor surfaces and/or paint the edge of steps yellow to show their location.

To prevent falls make sure:

» ladders meet AS1892;
» ladders are used on safe surfaces;
» mezzanine floors are guarded;
» safe step stools are used for reaching high work areas; and
» you use available hand grips when exiting from high vehicles (and exit backwards).
