Customer Complaint
Idle is poor and erratic. Engine is hunting.

Problem Summary
Vehicle had been checked for intermittent erratic and rough idle by a service provider.

Service provider quoted on a replacement charcoal canister.

Diagnostic Sequence
Vehicle tested and inspected. Checked on 4 gas - running very lean.
Could not hear any air leaks. Used flammable spray over inlet area and when sprayed over circled area the idle changed.
Used a fine brush dipped in fuel to pin the air leak down.

 
 
 
 
Fault Description

Found the EGR fitting had a bolt missing and top bolt was loose at the EGR housing inlet fitting causing an air leak and rough idle.

 
 
 
     
 
Fault Solution

Found a replacement bolt, checked the gasket and re-secured the fitting.
Cleared code and road tested OK.

Recommended Time
Labour time was 2 hours, taking into account research time, location of parts and actual time spent fixing the problem.
