NSW Training Awards 2011

Entries are now open for the prestigious NSW Training Awards in 2011. The awards recognise and celebrate outstanding achievement and commitment in the vocational education and training sector.

There are 16 award categories, including Apprentice of the Year, Trainee of the Year, School Based Apprentice/Trainee of the Year and Employer of the Year. Two new award categories have been introduced for 2011, the VET Trainer/Teacher and Industry Collaboration awards.

The Motor Traders’ Association of NSW sponsors the Top Apprentice in Vehicle Trades Award, one of three special industry awards presented each year.

Todd Manwaring, from Harden Automotive, won the Riverina Region award for Outstanding Achievement in Automotive Trades and went on to receive the 2010 Top Apprentice in Vehicle Trades Award.

Todd’s commitment to excellence in both his studies and workshop tasks made him a standout apprentice. Todd’s work at Harden Automotive with Paul and Sonia Fredericks is not simply to service and maintain new and used vehicles, but includes engine rebuilds, transmissions, differentials, suspension and brakes on a range of both light and heavy vehicles. Todd enjoys both the opportunity and the challenge of working on a wide range of vehicles.

Todd said he has always had an interest in the automotive industry. He saw his studies as an integral part of his apprenticeship and felt striving for high achievement was part and parcel of his trade training. Todd was awarded an Academic Excellence Award for Highest Achievement in Automotive Trades in 2009 by his training provider. In May of this year Todd won the Institute of Automotive Mechanical Engineers Award for the Most Outstanding Apprentice in Country NSW Institutes. Todd says his attitude to work and studies, respect for others, and his courteous nature can be put down to his upbringing. He loves to follow local sport and takes his fishing boat out at every opportunity.

With 16 categories in the 2011 NSW Training Awards, spanning all aspects of vocational education and training, all eligible students, employers, trainers and training providers are encouraged to apply.

Mr David Collins, General Manager, State Training Services, said the awards recognise outstanding achievement in training by organisations and individuals.

Mr Collins said “There is a multitude of talented students who are doing fantastic things within their training, within their work, but also doing fantastic things within their communities. The NSW Training Awards allow us to show people how much opportunity there is, how much potential there is and how much they stand to gain by participating in training. Apprenticeships and traineeships offer a sound career path for our industry leaders of the future.”

There are more than 162,000 apprentices and trainees currently employed in NSW, and some 55,000 of those apprenticeships are in traditional trades.

NSW Awards finalists are chosen from regional selection processes held in Sydney, Western Sydney, South Western Sydney, Southern Sydney, Central Coast, Riverina, New England, North Coast, Western NSW, Illawarra and the Hunter. State winners will then have the opportunity to compete at the Australian Training Awards.

Applications for the 2011 NSW Training Awards are now being accepted, and will close on the 25th Match 2011.
