Divisional Matters: Greg Preston
Ensuring public safety is put before profits The recent reports in the media about insurance companies increasing premiums to cover lost profits from poor investments comes as no surprise to most in the motor industry. Insurance companies, like any business, strive to ensure a profit. But at what cost?

Drains, separators and washing cars. We’ve all seen the gutter drains marked with green slogans; “The drain is meant for rain” or “What you drop the rivers cop”. The spray painted pictures of dolphins and fish remind us that if something goes down that drain, it will run into the stormwater system and we’ll find ourselves swimming amongst it next time we are at the beach. We know that these drains are stormwater drains.

Illegal hire car activities
"Recently, the NSW Government demonstrated its commitment to hire car passenger safety by successfully prosecuting an illegal hire car operator. The operator was running an illegal hire car operation and also driving an unlicensed hire car without an appropriate driver authority. 105 charges were proven resulting in the illegal operator being fined $420,000. The NSW Government has zero tolerance for criminal activities in the hire car industry. A 12 month operation has been in place to gather evidence in order to prepare a charge list to present to the courts. We were successful in a prosecution under the Passenger Transport Act 1990. NSW Transport and Infrastructure has Compliance Officers who operate across the state. Covert and overt operations take place seven days a week, 365 days a year."

Personal property security reform Members will be aware that for some time the Commonwealth Attorney General’s (AG) Department has been working towards the introduction of a national Personal Property Security (PPS) register and its supporting legislation and regulatory regime.

It is anticipated that the commencement date will be February 2012 In the words of Michael Delaney, Executive Director of the Motor Trades Association of Australia (MTAA), “The commencement of that scheme represents a change of some significance in the manner in which securitisation of monetary obligations will be effected in Australia.” Acknowledging that significance, the AG’s Department has prepared a Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) sheet relating to PPS reform which can be accessed below.

'Thanks to Wayde and the MTA'
Having been in the automotive repair industry for 38 years as a mechanic and now business Owner, you find most people are quick to complain and slow to say thanks, great job or pay Someone a compliment. I would like to give Wayde Rushton a big rap and pat on the back for the way he represented me at a fair trading hearing yesterday (with the best possible result) Without him there I think I would have been dead in the water. So again, thanks to Wayde and the MTA for a great service and support.
