REPORT NUMBER - HOLR901214
MAKE Holden | MODEL HOLDEN RODEO R9 SERIES
YEAR 2004 | ENGINE 6 Cylinders

Customer Complaint
Check transmission light flashing.

Problem Summary
Vehicle was fitted with a reconditioned gear box.
After replacement the ‘check trans’ light was flashing on the dash.
A suspect inhibitor switch was replaced.

Diagnostic Sequence
Scan took extracted code 54 (selector malfunction).
Carried out light check and found reverse lights not working.
Had no power to inhibitor switch.

Fault Description
Found the fuse inside the driver's dash was blown.
Also found the cig/lighter fuse was blown.
No signs of any obvious short.
Noticed the cig/lighter socket housing was loose.

Fault Solution
Checked both circuits for a possible short. No obvious problem found.
The fact that the cig/lighter socket looked well used we suspected that the owner had blown the fuse pushing in an adaptor and then he used the reverse fuse to get the circuit working and thought nothing of it because the box was already faulty.
The fact is that the reverse light circuit fuse affects the transmission system.
We replaced both fuses, re-secured the cig/lighter assembly and road tested the vehicle.

Recommended Time
Labour time was 2.5 hours, taking into account research time, location of parts and actual time spent fixing the problem.

Tip: It is the technician’s job to cover all possibilities before giving the vehicle back to the customer. A fuse (of correct type and size) does not blow just because it feels like it.
